I switched to DSLR scanning for 35mm, and the difference is night and day. The flatbed scanner I had was not very high end, and had no option for manually focusing or changing exposure. With the DSLR, I can now scan slides and have them come out very close to the original, plus the scans are far sharper. For medium format there isn't much of a difference, but I'm very happy with the new setup.

Saw Oppenheimer on 5-perf 70mm last year and absolutely loved it. Happily, my local indie cinema has a good projectionist, and there were no issues with framing on the screen, dirt on the print, out-of-focus projection or anything. The movie looked so good that I didn't notice any errors in focus. A problem nowadays is that because hardly anywhere has the capability of screening films on 35 or 70, there is less care taken, and younger folks just assume that a sort of aesthetic crappiness is the "authentic" look of film. Last year, In the same cinema, I saw a 70mm print of Interstellar, and it too looked stunning. What I did notice was that the colour palette was vastly superior to the Blu-Ray that came out a decade ago. The digital version was overly contrasty and saturated - all the actors looked like they had been smeared in fake tan. The film print, on the other hand, was rich and saturated, but in a more natural way. You are lucky to still be able to see authentic IMAX movies. My local IMAX scrapped its film projector and replaced it with a digital one. LIE-MAX, I believe it's called. The last move I saw in "real" IMAX was The Dark Knight Rises. The IMAX shots were full-screen and the 35mm shots were letterboxed. You might think that this switiching of aspect ration during the film would have been distracting, but I hardly noticed it. If the success of Oppenheimer doesn't convince other filmmakers that shooting on film is still viable a option, then nothing will.

Love seeing how things have progressed! I’ve been shooting the various iterations on and off starting in the early days of the Impossible Project, and it’s awesome that all of the weird experimental emulsions led to something that’s absolutely ready for professional work.

Someone said it below…. You should go for an older GFX. The 50R and 50S both have analog controls. So although you have menus to set initially, after that they operate like filmcameras. I bought a 50R when Fuji discontinued them just because I saw the dials were being removed. The newer ones have useful features but I hate the shooting experience. Thinking of getting a film camera to be able to go back to the simplicity of analog shooting.

24:32 Scanner is smth doing scanning and scanning (by difinition) is registration dot by dot, or row by row, but not simultanious "area' as camera sensor do. Scanner sensors are just one (per RGB channel) row, but not an area sensor. So this digitizing by camera, or as we see on this footage is not scanning at all, as scanning does not mean digitizing.

Ribsy, do you still have Pro 400H? I learned from my own experience the best way to shoot Pro 400H is to use a UV filter on your lens. This corrects a lot of the weird magenta colour cast from this particular film. Try it, you'll see what I mean, it makes a huge difference and there will be much less headaches later for scanning or darkroom printing.

I started doing my own B&W processing in 1968 when I was sixteen, taught myself the Zone System with a pair of Nikon Fs while doing PJ work in college assisted top wedding shooter Monte Zucker from 1972-74 then worked as technician at the National Geographic Society doing photo lithography which led me to career teaching reproduction photography and managing printing plants. In 1979 I had the money and space for “the darkroom of my dreams” with a Bessler Color Enlarger which I used both for making my own color prints and for dialing-in Magenta/Yellow filtration for B&W prints made with my roll film Med. Format camera using a Zone System approach for exposure metering and reading scene range with my 1° spot meter. Thanks to my technical background I realized I could set exposure via a reading from “Zone 1” Shadow tones in the scene simply by adjusting meter ISO until the reading exposed them optimally on negative and print. Then reading a “Zone 9” highlighted object in the scene would tell me the range of the scene in f/stops - EV units and from that and testing I did I’d know exactly what filter pack I’d need to print that scene on Polycontrast paper to get a full range B&W print with detail everywhere. The same approach worked with color negative film to ensure the shadows were always optimally exposed. With Ektachrome and Kodachrome I spot metered the Zone 9 highlight, adjusting meter ISO until they were correctly exposed. I started shooting digitally and posting photos on the Internet in 1994 with an Apple QuickTake 100 camera and switched entirely to digital for my personal shooting in 2000 after getting a Kodak DC290. While I think it is great photographers like yourself are learning and using analog / chemical photography for me I am happy to have it just a fond nostalgic memory because it is far more difficult to get good results, it lacked the immediate feedback of digital, and disposing of the processing chemicals responsibly is a problem.
